Village Corps Ghana Limited (VCG) is developing a 40MW biomass renewable energy project with a 10,000+ hectare organic agroforestry farming system in the Akyem Aubakwa Kingdom in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Project will regenerate more than 10,000 hectares of degraded lands, establishing an organic agro-forestry farming system of food crops and a secure supply of feedstock for the power facility from agricultural waste streams. The integrated approach, coupling the farming system and biomass power plant, will become the apex of a new agricultural economy in the region, providing reliable and cost-effective electricity to the national grid from renewable sources, with the farming system creating an organic supply chain infrastructure to enable 5,000 smallholder farmers to sustainably support themselves by cultivating food crops. The integrated development approach delivers systemic and enduring socio-economic and environmental impacts, including reliable, quality jobs, community livelihood enhancements, emissions reductions and land and water regeneration.
